Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Lemon extract is a substance derived primarily from the fruit, peel, or essential oil of the lemon (Citrus limon). It contains a complex mix of bioactive phytochemicals, including vitamin C, flavonoids, phenolic acids, coumarins, limonoids, and significant levels of citric acid. Lemon extract and its components have demonstrated antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, anticancer, anti-diarrheal, and potential analgesic properties in preclinical studies. D-limonene, the major component of lemon essential oil, acts on serotonin and dopamine receptors and may exert anxiolytic and antinociceptive effects. Lemon extract has shown inhibitory effects on enzymes such as acetylcholinesterase and butyrylcholinesterase in vitro. Some small human and animal studies suggest potential benefits in improving lipid metabolism, glycemic response, blood pressure, and pain control, as well as in aromatherapy applications for reducing post-operative nausea and pain. However, strong clinical evidence is lacking for most uses.[1][3][4][6][7]
