Overview
Lemongrass essential oil gel is an investigational herbal local drug delivery agent developed by Alexandria University's Faculty of Dentistry for the treatment of moderate (Stage II) periodontitis. Formulated as a 2% gel, it is administered directly into the periodontal pocket as an adjunct to conventional scaling and root planing (SRP). The therapeutic effect is primarily mediated through the reduction of Matrix Metalloproteinase-8 (MMP-8) levels in the gingival crevicular fluid, a biomarker associated with periodontal tissue destruction. Additionally, the lemongrass (*Cymbopogon citratus*) essential oil exhibits antimicrobial properties against key periodontal pathogens, including *Porphyromonas gingivalis* and *Actinomyces naeslundii*, helping to improve clinical parameters and oral health in patients with moderate periodontal disease.
