Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Lenbelintide (AZD6234) is a long-acting, selective amylin receptor agonist (SARA) being developed by AstraZeneca for the treatment of obesity, overweight, and type 2 diabetes mellitus. It is a modified peptide analog of human amylin (islet amyloid polypeptide) designed for once-weekly subcutaneous administration. Lenbelintide acts primarily on amylin receptors (AMYRs) in the brain to promote satiety, slow gastric emptying, and suppress postprandial glucagon secretion, thereby facilitating weight loss and improving glycemic control. It is currently in Phase III clinical development under the SELENE clinical trial program (including SELENE 1, SELENE 2, and SELENE 3), where it is being evaluated both as a monotherapy and as an adjunct to incretin-based therapies (such as GLP-1 receptor agonists).
