Lenzites betulina extract (LBE) is an ethanolic extract derived from the wild mushroom *Lenzites betulina*, a member of the Polyporaceae family. It is currently under preclinical investigation for its anti-cancer properties, particularly against cervical cancer. LBE contains a variety of bioactive compounds, including fatty acids such as 9,12-octadecadienoic acid and sterols like ergosta-5,8,22-trien-3-ol. The extract exerts its anti-tumor effects by inducing apoptosis through the mitochondrial pathway, which involves the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), reduction of mitochondrial membrane potential, upregulation of the p53 tumor suppressor gene, and downregulation of anti-apoptotic proteins like Bcl-2. Furthermore, LBE has been shown to arrest the cell cycle at the G2/M checkpoint, induce autophagy, and inhibit metastasis by depolymerizing F-actin filaments and reducing cancer stem cell populations. In vivo studies in mice have demonstrated significant reductions in tumor volume and weight following treatment.
