Overview
Leonurine is a bioactive alkaloid derived from the traditional Chinese medicinal herb *Leonurus japonicus* (Motherwort). It is currently being developed as a pharmaceutical agent for various indications, most notably hyperlipidemia, for which it has entered Phase 1 clinical testing in the form of leonurine sulfate tablets. The compound exhibits significant immunomodulatory properties, specifically promoting the maturation and activity of monocyte-derived dendritic cells (moDCs) in patients with multiple myeloma and chronic myeloid leukemia by modulating arachidonic acid metabolism. Additionally, leonurine has been the subject of research collaborations, including with AstraZeneca, to explore its cardioprotective mechanisms for the treatment of heart disease, ischemic stroke, and atherosclerosis.
