Overview

Leptospermum petersonii ethyl acetate extract is a plant-derived extract obtained from the leaves of the lemon-scented tea tree (*Leptospermum petersonii*), an Australian native plant in the Myrtaceae family. It has been investigated for its potential anticancer and antimetastatic activities, particularly against pancreatic (MIA PaCa-2) and prostate (PC3) cancer cell lines. The extract's mechanism of action involves the induction of apoptosis, as evidenced by Caspase 3/7 activation and DNA fragmentation, as well as the upregulation of genes involved in DNA damage response and cell cycle control, specifically Retinoblastoma protein 1 (RB1) and Checkpoint kinase 1 (CHEK1). Despite these biological effects, preclinical in vitro studies have indicated that the ethyl acetate extract possesses lower cytotoxic potency compared to methanolic extracts of the same plant, with IC50 values exceeding 100 µg/mL, which has limited its further development in certain research programs.
