Overview
Leptospermum petersonii extract is a natural product derived from the lemon-scented teatree, a plant native to Australia. Research presented at the AACR 2026 meeting investigated its methanolic and ethyl acetate crude extracts for potential antineoplastic and antimetastatic properties. In vitro studies on pancreatic (MIA PaCa-2) and prostate (PC3) cancer cells demonstrated that the methanolic extract induces apoptosis, characterized by Caspase 3/7 activation and DNA fragmentation. The extract's mechanism of action involves the upregulation of the RB1 tumor suppressor and Checkpoint kinase 1 (CHEK1), leading to cell cycle arrest and DNA damage-induced programmed cell death. It also exhibits inhibitory effects on cell migration, suggesting antimetastatic potential.
