Overview

Lercanidipine is a long-acting dihydropyridine calcium channel blocker used primarily for the treatment of hypertension (high blood pressure). It works by inhibiting the influx of calcium ions through voltage-gated L-type calcium channels in vascular smooth muscle cells. This action leads to relaxation and dilation of blood vessels (vasodilation), thereby lowering peripheral resistance and reducing blood pressure. Compared to older dihydropyridine agents like nifedipine or amlodipine it has a slower onset and longer duration of action with potentially fewer adverse effects such as peripheral edema. It is not approved in the United States but is widely marketed internationally under various brand names[1][2][3][4][5].
