Lercanidipine is a long-acting dihydropyridine calcium channel blocker used primarily for the treatment of hypertension (high blood pressure). It works by inhibiting the influx of calcium ions through voltage-gated L-type calcium channels in vascular smooth muscle cells. This action leads to relaxation and dilation of blood vessels (vasodilation), thereby lowering peripheral resistance and reducing blood pressure.
