Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Leucine + whey protein is a combination dietary supplement consisting of the essential branched-chain amino acid leucine and whey protein, a high-quality, rapidly digestible animal-derived protein source. Both components are well-known for their roles in promoting muscle protein synthesis (MPS) and supporting muscle growth and recovery, particularly in athletes and individuals engaged in resistance training. Leucine acts as a key activator of the mTOR pathway, which triggers MPS when sufficient levels are present. Whey protein is rich in essential amino acids—especially branched-chain amino acids like leucine—and provides all necessary building blocks for new muscle tissue. The combination aims to maximize anabolic signaling (via leucine) while supplying a complete spectrum of amino acids (via whey), potentially enhancing both strength gains and improvements in body composition during resistance training[1][4]. However, evidence suggests that adding extra leucine to an already adequate dose of high-leucine proteins like whey may not further increase MPS or muscle growth beyond what is achieved with sufficient high-quality protein alone[2][3].
