Overview

Leucocyte and Platelet-Rich Fibrin (L-PRF) is an autologous, second-generation platelet concentrate used as a bioactive scaffold in regenerative medicine and dentistry. Developed for endodontic applications by Universitaire Ziekenhuizen KU Leuven, it is prepared by centrifuging a patient's own blood without anticoagulants to form a fibrin clot rich in platelets, leucocytes, and a variety of growth factors, including TGF-β1, VEGF, and PDGF. In the context of regenerative endodontic procedures (REP), L-PRF is placed into the root canal of immature permanent teeth affected by pulp necrosis and apical periodontitis. It serves as a three-dimensional matrix that promotes periapical bone healing, stimulates stem cell migration, and supports continued root development (apexogenesis) by providing a sustained release of bioactive molecules.
