Overview

This is an autologous, leukocyte-depleted (pure) platelet-rich plasma (P-PRP) preparation developed by Dr. Jose Ignacio Martin and colleagues at Cruces University Hospital for the treatment of chronic epicondylitis (elbow tendinopathy). Unlike leukocyte-rich formulations, this P-PRP is processed to minimize white blood cell content, which is hypothesized to reduce post-injection inflammation and pain. The preparation is activated with calcium chloride to trigger the release of growth factors—including PDGF, TGF-β, and VEGF—from platelet alpha-granules. These factors promote angiogenesis, collagen synthesis, and tenocyte proliferation, facilitating the repair of degenerate tendon tissue. In clinical trials (notably NCT01945528), it is administered via ultrasound-guided percutaneous needle tenotomy to patients with recalcitrant lateral or medial epicondylitis.
