Overview
Leukocyte-platelet-rich fibrin (L-PRF) is an autologous, second-generation platelet concentrate biologic primarily used in oral, dental, and maxillofacial surgery to enhance wound healing and tissue regeneration. It is prepared by centrifuging a patient's own blood without anticoagulants to create a dense fibrin matrix enriched with leukocytes, platelets, and a high concentration of growth factors. This matrix acts as a biological scaffold that gradually releases bioactive molecules, such as platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β), and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), to promote angiogenesis and tissue repair. L-PRF is currently being evaluated by institutions like the Universidad Austral de Chile for applications such as preserving tooth socket tissue structure following third molar extractions.
