Leukocyte-Poor Platelet-Rich Plasma (LP-PRP) is an autologous biologic therapy derived from a patient's own blood. It is processed to contain a high concentration of platelets while minimizing the presence of white blood cells (leukocytes), particularly neutrophils, which are thought to potentially induce unwanted inflammatory responses in joint tissues. The Steadman Philippon Research Institute is investigating LP-PRP as an adjunct treatment following anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR). The therapeutic effect is mediated by the release of high concentrations of growth factors from platelet alpha-granules, including platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β), and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). These factors promote cellular proliferation, collagen synthesis, and angiogenesis, thereby accelerating the healing of the ACL graft and surrounding joint tissues.
