Leukocyte-rich platelet-rich plasma (PRP-L) is an autologous blood-derived biologic product characterized by a high concentration of platelets and leukocytes compared to whole blood. In the context of clinical evaluation by the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Nīmes, it is being investigated for the treatment of lateral epicondylalgia (tennis elbow). The therapeutic mechanism involves the degranulation of concentrated platelets, which releases a variety of growth factors—including platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β), and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)—that facilitate tissue repair, collagen synthesis, and angiogenesis. The inclusion of leukocytes is intended to provide an initial inflammatory response and potential antimicrobial effects to jumpstart the healing process in chronic tendinopathies, distinguishing it from leukocyte-poor PRP formulations.
