Leukoreduced donor whole blood refers to a specific blood product derived from a deceased solid organ donor, intended for transfusion into the recipient of that donor's liver during transplantation. Developed and studied by Vanderbilt University Medical Center, this approach utilizes up to four units of the donor's own whole blood, which has been filtered to remove white blood cells (leukoreduced). The primary objective is to provide a balanced ratio of red blood cells, plasma, and platelets from a single source (the organ donor) to maintain hemodynamic stability and coagulation during the high-blood-loss environment of liver surgery, potentially reducing exposure to multiple allogenic banked blood donors and improving clinical outcomes.
