Leukoreduced type O whole blood

Leukoreduced type O whole blood (LTOWB) is a biologic blood product containing red blood cells, plasma, and platelets in physiologic proportions. It is being evaluated in the Phase 3 T-STORHM trial, sponsored by the Direction Centrale du Service de Santé des Armées (French Armed Forces Health Service), for the treatment of acute traumatic hemorrhage and coagulopathy. Unlike traditional component therapy, which requires separate administration of packed red blood cells, plasma, and platelets, LTOWB provides a complete transfusion solution in a single bag, simplifying logistics in emergency and mass casualty settings. The product specifically uses type O blood with low titers of anti-A and anti-B antibodies to allow for safe emergency transfusion to patients of any blood type, while leukoreduction is performed to reduce the risk of febrile non-hemolytic transfusion reactions and pathogen transmission.
