Leukothera is an experimental biologic drug candidate derived from a bacterial protein known as leukotoxin (LtxA). It specifically targets the leukocyte function antigen-1 (LFA-1) on white blood cells, binding to this integrin and inducing rapid cell death via apoptosis or necrosis. This mechanism allows it to selectively kill malignant and/or inflammatory white blood cells involved in diseases such as leukemia and lymphoma. Preclinical studies have shown that Leukothera is highly effective at inducing apoptosis in leukemia cell lines and primary patient samples, both as a single agent and in combination with standard chemotherapeutics. Unlike many cancer therapies, it does not compromise the immune system overall. The drug is being developed for hematologic malignancies (such as relapsed or refractory leukemia/lymphoma), autoimmune diseases, inflammatory conditions, and potentially HIV infection[2][3][5].
