Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Novosis leuprorelin is a 10.72 mg biodegradable subcutaneous implant formulation of the gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonist leuprorelin (also known as leuprolide). Developed by Novosis AG, this sustained-release formulation is designed to provide therapeutic testosterone suppression over a 12-week period for the treatment of advanced prostate cancer. As a GnRH agonist, it initially stimulates the pituitary gland to release luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), but continuous exposure leads to GnRH receptor downregulation. This results in a profound reduction in LH and FSH secretion, subsequently lowering serum testosterone to castrate levels, which inhibits the growth of hormone-dependent prostate cancer cells. In Phase III clinical trials, the Novosis implant demonstrated non-inferiority to established leuprorelin formulations like Trenantone.
