Overview
Levalbuterol is a short-acting beta2-adrenergic receptor agonist used as a bronchodilator for the treatment and prevention of bronchospasm in patients with reversible obstructive airway diseases such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It is the (R)-enantiomer of albuterol, providing selective stimulation of beta2 receptors on airway smooth muscle. This activation increases intracellular cyclic AMP, leading to relaxation of bronchial smooth muscle, inhibition of mediator release from mast cells, and improved airflow. Levalbuterol is commonly administered via inhalation using metered-dose inhalers or nebulizers[1][4][5][8].
