Levamlodipine is the pharmacologically active S-enantiomer of amlodipine, a dihydropyridine calcium channel blocker. It is used as an antihypertensive agent to treat high blood pressure in adults and children, either alone or in combination with other medications. Levamlodipine works by selectively inhibiting L-type calcium channels in vascular smooth muscle, leading to vasodilation, reduced peripheral vascular resistance, and decreased blood pressure. Its action on cardiac muscle is less pronounced than on vascular smooth muscle. The drug may also decrease coronary vascular resistance and increase coronary blood flow, contributing to its antianginal effects[1][2][3][4][5][6][7]. Levamlodipine is administered orally and undergoes extensive hepatic metabolism; it has a long half-life that supports once-daily dosing.
