Levetiracetam is a novel antiepileptic drug used to treat epilepsy. It is indicated for the treatment of partial-onset seizures, myoclonic seizures (especially in juvenile myoclonic epilepsy), and primary generalized tonic-clonic seizures in adults and children. Levetiracetam acts primarily as a ligand for synaptic vesicle glycoprotein 2A (SV2A), modulating neurotransmitter release and reducing abnormal neuronal excitability. Its precise mechanism of action remains incompletely understood but is distinct from other antiepileptic drugs. Levetiracetam was discovered in 1992 and approved for medical use in the United States in 1999. It is available as immediate-release or extended-release oral formulations and as an intravenous injection[1][3][4][5][6].
