Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Levoamlodipine besylate is the chirally pure (S)-enantiomer of the racemic calcium channel blocker amlodipine. It belongs to the dihydropyridine class and is primarily indicated for the treatment of hypertension and angina pectoris. By selectively inhibiting the influx of calcium ions through L-type calcium channels into vascular smooth muscle and cardiac muscle cells, levoamlodipine induces peripheral vasodilation, thereby reducing blood pressure and myocardial oxygen demand. As the pharmacologically active isomer, levoamlodipine provides comparable clinical efficacy to racemic amlodipine at half the dosage, which may lead to a reduced incidence of dose-dependent adverse effects such as peripheral edema. It has been developed and marketed by companies including CSPC Pharmaceutical Group and Jiangsu Wango Pharmaceutical.
