levoamlodipine maleate

Levoamlodipine maleate is the chirally pure (S)-enantiomer of the racemic calcium channel blocker amlodipine. It belongs to the dihydropyridine class of calcium channel blockers (CCBs) and is used primarily for the treatment of essential hypertension and angina pectoris. By selectively inhibiting the influx of calcium ions through L-type calcium channels into vascular smooth muscle and cardiac muscle cells, levoamlodipine promotes peripheral vasodilation and reduces vascular resistance, thereby lowering blood pressure. As the active (S)-enantiomer, it provides comparable antihypertensive efficacy at approximately half the dose of racemic amlodipine, which may lead to a reduced incidence of dose-dependent adverse effects such as peripheral edema.
