Overview

Levocetirizine is a third-generation antihistamine and the R-enantiomer of cetirizine. It acts as a selective histamine H1 receptor antagonist, blocking the effects of histamine—a chemical responsible for allergic symptoms such as itching, sneezing, runny nose, watery eyes, and hives. By inhibiting the H1 receptor on mast cells and basophils, levocetirizine prevents IgE-mediated release of histamine and reduces allergy symptoms. It is primarily indicated for the relief of symptoms associated with allergic rhinitis (hay fever), both seasonal and perennial types, as well as chronic idiopathic urticaria (hives). Levocetirizine is available in oral tablet and solution forms[1][2][3][4][5][6].
