Levodopa + benserazide hydrochloride is a fixed-dose combination therapy used for the treatment of Parkinson's disease and parkinsonism. It consists of levodopa, a precursor to the neurotransmitter dopamine, and benserazide hydrochloride, a peripherally-acting aromatic L-amino acid decarboxylase (DOPA decarboxylase) inhibitor. Since levodopa is rapidly metabolized in the peripheral tissues to dopamine, which cannot cross the blood-brain barrier and causes systemic side effects, benserazide is co-administered to block this peripheral conversion. This increases the amount of levodopa that reaches the brain, where it is converted to dopamine to alleviate motor symptoms, while reducing peripheral side effects such as nausea and cardiovascular issues.
