Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Levodopa-carbidopa intestinal gel (LCIG) is a combination pharmaceutical product formulated as a gel for continuous intrajejunal infusion, primarily used to treat advanced Parkinson's disease. It consists of levodopa, a metabolic precursor of dopamine, and carbidopa, a peripheral aromatic L-amino acid decarboxylase inhibitor. The therapy is delivered via a portable pump through a percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy with a jejunal extension (PEG-J) tube directly into the small intestine. This delivery modality is designed to provide stable plasma levodopa concentrations and continuous dopaminergic stimulation, bypassing the stomach to minimize the motor fluctuations ("off" time) and troublesome dyskinesias often associated with the pulsatile stimulation caused by oral levodopa formulations.
