Overview
Levodopa/carbidopa/entacapone intestinal gel, marketed under the brand name LECIGON, is a small molecule combination therapy developed by Britannia Pharmaceuticals (a subsidiary of STADA Group) for the treatment of advanced Parkinson's disease. The formulation contains levodopa (a dopamine precursor), carbidopa (a DOPA decarboxylase inhibitor), and entacapone (a catechol-O-methyltransferase [COMT] inhibitor) in a gel form designed for continuous intestinal infusion. By inhibiting both peripheral DOPA decarboxylase and COMT, the drug maximizes the bioavailability of levodopa and reduces its peripheral metabolism, allowing for lower doses and smaller infusion volumes compared to dual-component gels. It is administered directly into the proximal jejunum via a percutaneous endoscopic trans-gastric jejunostomy (PEG-J) tube using a portable pump, providing stable plasma levels and reducing motor fluctuations in patients with severe symptoms.
