Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Levofamil is a fixed-dose combination tablet containing 250 mg of levodopa and 25 mg of carbidopa, developed by Laboratorios Andromaco S.A. for the treatment of Parkinson's disease. Levodopa is a metabolic precursor of dopamine that crosses the blood-brain barrier and is converted into dopamine in the basal ganglia, thereby replenishing depleted neurotransmitter levels. Carbidopa is a peripheral aromatic L-amino acid decarboxylase inhibitor that does not cross the blood-brain barrier. Its role is to prevent the peripheral metabolism of levodopa into dopamine, which increases the amount of levodopa available to reach the central nervous system and significantly reduces peripheral side effects such as nausea and vomiting. This formulation has been evaluated in bioequivalence studies against the reference product Sinemet.
