levofloxacin

Levofloxacin is a broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone antibiotic used to treat a variety of serious bacterial infections in different parts of the body, including pneumonia, sinusitis, bronchitis, urinary tract infections (UTIs), skin infections, kidney and prostate infections. It is also indicated for the prevention and treatment of anthrax and plague exposure[1][2][3][5][6][8]. Levofloxacin acts as a bactericidal agent by inhibiting two key bacterial enzymes—DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV—which are essential for DNA replication and cell division. By blocking these enzymes, levofloxacin disrupts bacterial DNA synthesis leading to cell death[4][5]. It was first approved by the FDA in 1996[1]. The drug is available in oral tablets, oral solution, injectable forms for systemic use (brand names include Levaquin), as well as ophthalmic solutions for eye infections (brand names include Iquix and Quixin)[6].
