Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Levofloxacin + meropenem is a combination antibiotic therapy that demonstrates synergistic effects against Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections. This combination provides significantly faster bacterial killing (achieving 3-log cell kill more rapidly) and better resistance suppression than either drug used as monotherapy. The combination is particularly effective against ventilator-requiring, hospital-acquired pneumonia caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Meropenem is a carbapenem β-lactam antibiotic, while levofloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic. Studies using in vitro hollow-fiber pharmacodynamic infection models have shown that this combination prevents resistance emergence even at lower drug exposures than would be required for monotherapy.
