The Levofloxacin Ocular Implant is a fully biodegradable, sustained-release drug delivery system developed by PolyActiva Pty Ltd for the prevention and treatment of endophthalmitis following cataract surgery and other ocular procedures. The product utilizes PolyActiva's proprietary Prezia technology to form a polymeric prodrug of levofloxacin, a fluoroquinolone antibiotic. This implant is designed to be administered as a bioerodable device that releases a controlled dose of levofloxacin over approximately 30 days, ensuring constant therapeutic levels and eliminating the need for post-operative antibiotic eye drops. Levofloxacin exerts its antibacterial effect by inhibiting bacterial DNA synthesis through the targeting of DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV. The implant completely biodegrades after the treatment period, leaving no residue in the eye.
