Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Efafol is a nutraceutical supplement developed by Alico Pharmaceutical containing levomefolic acid (L-methylfolate). As the primary biologically active form of folate, levomefolic acid is essential for the conversion of homocysteine to methionine and the synthesis of DNA and RNA. Unlike synthetic folic acid, it does not require enzymatic conversion by methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR), making it particularly beneficial for individuals with MTHFR genetic polymorphisms. It is commonly used to support prenatal health, manage folate deficiency, and as an adjunct in the treatment of depression.
