NPO-13 is a pharmaceutical formulation of levomenthol (L-menthol) developed by Nippon Kayaku as an antispasmodic agent for use during colonoscopy. It is administered via intraluminal spraying onto the colonic mucosa to suppress moderate to severe colonic spasms, thereby facilitating clearer visualization of the bowel lumen and improving the detection of colorectal lesions. Levomenthol exerts its antispasmodic effect by acting as a calcium channel blocker, inhibiting the influx of calcium ions into the smooth muscle cells of the colon, which leads to rapid muscle relaxation. NPO-13 is an optimized formulation following the company's previously launched product, MINCLE (NPO-11), and has completed Phase 3 clinical development in Japan.
