levonidazole

Levonidazole is a nitroimidazole antimicrobial agent structurally related to metronidazole. It is primarily developed and used in China for the treatment of infections caused by anaerobic bacteria and certain protozoa. Like other nitroimidazoles, levonidazole acts by entering susceptible microorganisms and undergoing reduction to generate reactive intermediates that damage microbial DNA, leading to cell death. Levonidazole has been investigated as an alternative to metronidazole with potentially improved pharmacokinetic properties and tolerability profile. Its main indications are similar to those of metronidazole, including intra-abdominal infections, gynecological infections, skin and soft tissue infections, and other anaerobic or mixed bacterial infections.
