Levonorgestrel is a synthetic second-generation progestogen that acts as a potent agonist of the progesterone receptor. It is widely utilized in various contraceptive formulations, including emergency contraceptive pills (ECPs), long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARCs) such as intrauterine systems (IUS), and combined oral contraceptive pills. As an emergency contraceptive, it primarily functions by delaying or inhibiting ovulation through the suppression of luteinizing hormone (LH) surges. It may also alter cervical mucus to impede sperm transport and, theoretically, inhibit implantation by altering the endometrium, although the latter mechanism is not the primary mode of action. The brand "Plan A," marketed by Afaxys Pharma, is a 1.5 mg single-dose oral tablet intended for use within 72 hours of unprotected intercourse or contraceptive failure.
