Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Liletta is a levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system (IUS) developed by the non-profit pharmaceutical company Medicines360. It consists of a T-shaped polyethylene frame with a drug reservoir containing 52 mg of levonorgestrel, a synthetic progestin. The system is designed for long-term contraception, providing effective pregnancy prevention for up to 8 years. Its primary mechanism of action involves the local release of levonorgestrel into the uterine cavity, which thickens the cervical mucus to inhibit sperm transport, impairs sperm function, and alters the endometrial lining to prevent implantation. While its primary effect is local, it may also suppress ovulation in some women. Liletta is FDA-approved for contraception and is also utilized for the management of heavy menstrual bleeding.
