Overview

Levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system (LCS16) is a long-acting reversible contraceptive device designed for intrauterine placement, releasing levonorgestrel at an initial in vitro rate of approximately 16 micrograms per day. It is primarily indicated for contraception in women of reproductive age and provides up to five years of pregnancy prevention. The mechanism of action involves local release of the progestin hormone levonorgestrel, which thickens cervical mucus to inhibit sperm passage, suppresses endometrial growth to prevent implantation, and may partially inhibit ovulation[2][6][7]. LCS16 is marketed under the brand name Kyleena and was developed by Bayer.
