Overview

Levoornidazole is the levorotatory enantiomer of ornidazole, a 5-nitroimidazole antimicrobial agent. It is used for the treatment of infections caused by anaerobic bacteria and protozoa, including *Entamoeba histolytica*. Developed by Yangtze River Pharmaceutical Group, it is frequently formulated as levoornidazole phosphate disodium for intravenous administration. The drug's mechanism involves the reduction of its nitro group by microbial enzymes, producing reactive intermediates that cause DNA strand breakage and inhibit nucleic acid synthesis, leading to cell death. It is indicated for postoperative intra-abdominal infections, severe intestinal and hepatic amebiasis, and the prevention of anaerobic infections during surgery.
