Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Levora (levonorgestrel and ethinyl estradiol) is an FDA-approved combination oral contraceptive used for the prevention of pregnancy. It consists of two active synthetic hormones: levonorgestrel, a progestin, and ethinyl estradiol, an estrogen. The drug primarily works by suppressing the secretion of gonadotropins, which inhibits ovulation. Secondary contraceptive effects include thickening the cervical mucus to impede sperm penetration and altering the endometrial lining to reduce the likelihood of implantation. Levora is a generic equivalent of the discontinued brand Nordette and is typically administered in a 28-day oral regimen. In clinical research, it has been utilized as an active comparator in Phase 3 trials, such as Agile Therapeutics' study evaluating the Twirla transdermal patch.
