Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Levornidazole is a novel nitroimidazole antimicrobial agent and the levo isomer of ornidazole. It acts by disrupting DNA synthesis and integrity in susceptible anaerobic bacteria and protozoa, primarily through reduction in anaerobic environments to form free radicals that interact with cellular components, leading to microbial death. Levornidazole demonstrates similar or slightly stronger activity against most anaerobic species compared to metronidazole and ornidazole, with improved safety—particularly a lower incidence of central nervous system adverse reactions. It is indicated for the treatment of infections caused by sensitive anaerobic bacteria, including intra-abdominal infections[1][3][4][6][8].
