Overview

A topical combination of levorotatory vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid) and arbutin (commonly as alpha-arbutin), used primarily in skincare for its synergistic effects on skin brightening, hyperpigmentation reduction, and antioxidant protection. Levorotatory vitamin C is a potent antioxidant that neutralizes free radicals, stimulates collagen synthesis, and inhibits melanin production by acting on the tyrosinase enzyme. Arbutin is a glycosylated hydroquinone derivative that also inhibits tyrosinase activity to reduce melanin formation. When combined, these agents target pigmentation from multiple angles—arbutin gently suppresses new pigment formation while vitamin C both prevents new pigment and helps fade existing discoloration. The combination is widely used in serums for improving uneven skin tone, fading dark spots/post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, reducing signs of aging such as fine lines or dullness, and promoting overall radiance[1][3][4][5]. This pairing is generally well-tolerated but should be accompanied by daily sunscreen use due to increased sun sensitivity.
