Levothyroxine is a synthetic form of the thyroid hormone thyroxine (T4), used primarily to treat hypothyroidism—a condition where the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormone. It is also indicated for suppressing various types of goiter and as an adjunct in the management of certain types of thyroid cancer alongside surgery and radioactive iodine therapy. Levothyroxine works by replacing or supplementing endogenous thyroxine levels in the body to restore normal metabolic activity regulated by thyroid hormones. The drug reverses symptoms associated with low thyroid hormone such as fatigue, weight gain, cold intolerance, and slowed metabolism[1][2][3][4][5].
