Drug intelligence / Profile preview
The Levulan Kerastick + BLU-U Blue Light Photodynamic Therapy Illuminator is a drug-device combination therapy used for the treatment of actinic keratoses and the prevention of non-melanoma skin cancer. The system utilizes Levulan Kerastick (aminolevulinic acid HCl 20% topical solution), a prodrug that is topically applied and metabolized intracellularly into the potent photosensitizer protoporphyrin IX (PpIX). Following an incubation period, the treated area is exposed to visible blue light (400-450 nm) from the BLU-U illuminator. This light activates the PpIX, leading to the generation of reactive oxygen species, primarily singlet oxygen, which causes selective destruction of abnormal or precancerous cells. This modality is particularly evaluated for cyclic preventative use in high-risk populations, such as solid organ transplant recipients.
