Overview

LHM (also known as Luohanmen) is an oral negative contrast agent developed by Nanjing Zhulu Pharmaceutical Technology for use in magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP). It is formulated as an oral solution containing ferric ammonium citrate, a paramagnetic substance. During MRCP, the presence of high-signal (bright) fluid in the stomach and duodenum can overlap with and obscure the biliary and pancreatic ducts on T2-weighted images. LHM works by utilizing the paramagnetic properties of ferric ions (Fe3+) to shorten the T2 relaxation time of water in the gastrointestinal tract, effectively suppressing the signal from these areas. This 'negative contrast' effect provides a dark background that enhances the visualization and diagnostic clarity of the biliary tree and pancreatic ducts. LHM is primarily indicated for the diagnostic evaluation of biliary tract and pancreatic diseases and is currently in Phase II clinical development in China.
