Liangxue Jiedu Runzhi

Liangxue Jiedu Runzhi (LJR) is a topical traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) ointment investigated for the treatment of mild-to-moderate psoriasis vulgaris with blood-heat syndrome. It is a polyherbal formulation containing Chinese angelica (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Arnebia root (Radix Arnebiae), Rhubarb root and rhizome (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei), Natural indigo (Indigo Naturalis), Belvedere fruit (Fructus Kochiae), Light yellow sophora root (Radix Sophorae Flavescentis), and Glabrous greenbrier rhizome (Rhizoma Smilacis Glabrae) in a base of sesame oil, vaseline, and beeswax. The mechanism of action is not fully elucidated but is believed to stem from the synergistic effects of its components, which include inhibiting keratinocyte proliferation, reducing inflammation by modulating cytokines such as TNF-α and IL-8, and restoring the skin's barrier function. In a double-blind, randomized controlled trial, LJR ointment demonstrated superior efficacy over a placebo in improving Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI) scores.
