Libracaine (BPI-001) is a pH-balanced, injectable local anesthetic being developed by Balanced Pharma for dental anesthesia. Traditional dental anesthetics are typically formulated at an acidic pH (approximately 3.9) to maintain stability, which can cause pain upon injection and delayed onset as the body must buffer the solution to physiologic pH (7.4) before the anesthetic can effectively cross nerve membranes. Libracaine utilizes a patented dual-chambered cartridge technology to provide a buffered (alkalinized) version of lidocaine or articaine at the point of care. This approach is designed to reduce injection pain, accelerate the onset of numbness, and improve the reliability of the anesthetic effect by increasing the concentration of the non-ionized, lipid-soluble form of the drug. In January 2025, Septodont, a global leader in dental anesthetics, made a strategic investment in Balanced Pharma to support the development of this technology.
