Overview
Licarbazepine is a voltage-gated sodium channel blocker with anticonvulsant and mood-stabilizing effects. It is structurally related to oxcarbazepine and is the major active metabolite of oxcarbazepine. Licarbazepine acts by inhibiting repetitive neuronal firing and stabilizing the inactivated state of voltage-gated sodium channels, thereby reducing abnormal electrical activity in the brain. The S-enantiomer of licarbazepine (eslicarbazepine) is also pharmacologically active and forms the basis for drugs such as eslicarbazepine acetate[7][4][6].
