Lichochalcone A (also spelled licochalcone A) is a naturally derived chalconoid compound isolated from the roots of Glycyrrhiza species, particularly *Glycyrrhiza inflata* (Chinese licorice). It is a small molecule cosmeceutical and topical agent widely utilized for its potent antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and photoprotective properties. Mechanistically, lichochalcone A inhibits the activation of the NLRP3 inflammasome, reduces reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, and downregulates inflammatory pathways such as NF-κB and MAPK. It is a key active ingredient in Beiersdorf's Eucerin® skincare and sunscreen formulations (such as Eucerin Sun Dry Touch Oil Control), where it is used to soothe sensitive skin, regulate sebum, and protect against UV- and high-energy visible (HEVIS) light-induced oxidative stress. In clinical studies, topical formulations containing lichochalcone A have been evaluated as effective adjuvants to retinoid therapies (like adapalene) for managing mild-to-moderate acne vulgaris and post-acne hyperpigmentation, significantly improving skin tolerability and reducing irritation.
