Overview

Licorice gargle is a botanical preparation derived from the roots of *Glycyrrhiza glabra* (licorice), utilized for its anti-inflammatory, demulcent, and soothing properties. In clinical settings, particularly perioperative care, it is administered as a gargle to prevent or mitigate postoperative sore throat (POST) and hoarseness following general anesthesia with endotracheal intubation or other airway devices. The therapeutic effects are primarily attributed to active constituents such as glycyrrhizin (glycyrrhizic acid) and glycyrrhetinic acid. These compounds are thought to reduce mucosal inflammation by inhibiting the enzyme 11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (11β-HSD), thereby increasing local cortisol levels, and by suppressing the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and mediators like prostaglandin E2.
