Overview

LAT gel is a topical anesthetic formulation containing lidocaine (4%), adrenaline (0.1%), and tetracaine (0.5%), designed for the local anesthesia of open wounds during laceration repair. Developed as a safer alternative to the cocaine-containing TAC gel, it combines the rapid-acting properties of lidocaine with the long-acting effects of tetracaine, both of which function by blocking voltage-gated sodium channels to inhibit pain signal transmission. The inclusion of adrenaline (epinephrine) provides local vasoconstriction via adrenergic receptor stimulation, which minimizes bleeding at the wound site and slows the systemic absorption of the anesthetics, thereby prolonging their local effect. The Vrije Universiteit Brussel has conducted clinical research evaluating LAT gel as a needle-free alternative to lidocaine infiltration for adult patients in the emergency department, aiming to reduce the pain associated with anesthetic administration.
